How cork can improve the underscreed static stiffness without compromising its dynamic stiffness

Embracing new cork challenges

Our vision in the heavy construction segment: Amorim Cork Composites has a long track record, spanning numerous different applications, which enable us to demonstrate components and materials across a wide variety of environments and conditions. Amorim Cork Composites intervenes at the start of the business value chain. Our goal, as material supplier, is to serve the market and customers and meet this challenge through our business partners. Although involved early on in the value chain, we are eager to embrace new challenges, knowledge and market stimuli, which can only come through strategic partnerships.

We recently challenged our team to develop a new light and highly capable underscreed, in compliance with our company’s highly sustainable policies. Our main technical goal was to provide the lowest dynamic stiffness in the market (per thickness) without impacting load capacity.

We recently challenged our team to develop a new light and highly capable underscreed, in compliance with our company’s highly sustainable policies. Our main technical goal was to provide the lowest dynamic stiffness in the market (per thickness) without impacting load capacity.

  • A new composite

We started by studying the new base material in its possible variations, density, granule size and shape, binder ratio, rigidity, among others. After this first stage, we aimed to obtain from the cork its best known characteristics, studying incorporation of different cork densities, granule sizes and shapes. Finally we optimized the cork ratio in order to deliver an optimal final product. At the end - when comparing the results from the final recycled polyurethane formula (without cork) and the final product (with cork), with the correct percentage, type, size and density of cork - we were able to triple its load capacity!

By mixing cork with recycled soft materials, Amorim Cork Composites is not just complying with the company’s highly sustainable policies, we are also maximising performance, by achieving the lowest dynamic stiffness without undermining the underscreed’s load capacity, thereby guaranteeing the lowest possible creep and highest possible recovery.

Our Alchemy

We have a perfectly balanced team of alchemists, from highly experienced Chemists, who have been discovering all the proprieties and characteristics of cork and complementary composites, to young and dynamic recently graduated interns that have no boundaries to their imagination, and know no limits for cork and composites.

  • The goal

Amorim Cork Composites aims to implement its global strategy locally. To this effect, we attend specific events and/or conferences, such as the Middle East Acoustic Society meetings, based on our material development capacities. We are also developing partnerships, based on uniqueness and trust, that will allow us to collect the necessary inputs from the market and applications needs and/or trends to develop new cork materials, and adapt our product portfolio and certifications.

We aim to highlight our capabilities, and thereby allow our current and future partners and the market in general to get to know us, and help us expand boundaries even further, through discovery of new cork applications and new ways to explore cork’s characteristics, and above all to contribute to a better world!

Sérgio Vaz Correia

Sérgio Vaz Correia graduated with a M.Sc.

degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Coimbra. He has begun his third year of work at Amorim Cork Composites as Product Manager, also with sales responsibilities. During his first two years as a member of ACC’s team, his responsibilities included expanding sales using strategies to improve sales targets in specific markets, implement the product strategy (value proposition, pricing strategy, product developments, etc.) and manage the current product line so as to ensure that Amorim’s portfolio remains competitive in the market place.

In light of his excellent performance and strong sales and technical skills, in July 2016, Amorim Cork Composites appointed Sérgio to a new position in a different market: the Middle East, where his tasks include local implementation of ACC’s global strategy in certain specific segments, increasing awareness of Amorim Cork Composites’s brands and expanding market share.
